Book Report Days

This is a poem I wrote.  I attempted to have it published in the campus mag but it was rejected. /sigh  Oh well, my readers could love it!  And, you never know.  Maybe there’s a mag out there that’ll take it and pay me for it.  Or maybe someday (perhaps posthumously) my blog will be made into hardbound volumes for loved ones and fans…

Whatever happened to the days I loved school?
Whatever happened to the time before term papers?

I miss the days of the “Book Report”
dioramas and manila paper crayon drawings
poster-board displays and working toilet paper tube models of Charlie’s factory
I miss “one page or less in your own words summarize the plot”
I miss “bring your favorite book to class for Show-And-Tell” Friday’s

I live in the days of term papers
long essays and research documents
lab reports and fifteen slide interactive PowerPoint presentations
I live “the pop quiz is thirty questions long, Scantron required”
I live “don’t forget a Blue Book for your midterm next Friday”

Whatever happened to those “Book Report” days?
Whatever happened to the days I loved school?

Ó lá go lá, mo thuras, an bealach fada romham. Ó oíche go hoíche, mo thuras, na scéalta nach mbeidh a choích.
